Everybody prepare, 2014 will be the year of the clowns! Again.
After watching Finding Nemo (at least a few times) the reaction from everyone was pretty much the same, the world has fallen in love with the clownfish. The number of people keeping saltwater aquariums skyrocketed, and much like what “The Big Bang Theory” has done for college physics programs, marine scientist program enrollment swelled. Many of us lucky enough to already have saltwater tanks went out and got ourselves a pair of plain old Ocellaris clowns, those of us with a little more imagination or style may have gotten black and white clown, maroon, or some other species of clown.
Fast-forward to December 2014 and prepare for the Year of the Designer Clowns. With the second group of the lighting maroon clowns all being sold, one for a whopping $6,500, 2014 promises to be another exciting year in the ornamental fish industry. Today it seems like there are more designer clowns swimming around than regular clowns. Black Ice, Snowcasso, snowflakes, rotten tomatoes, gold flake, stubbies, domino, midnight and naked, to name a few. In 2014 prepare for these to become even more popular and more easily available to the average aquarist. It isn’t hard to see why there’s such a fascination and a demand for these designer clowns; they are absolutely gorgeous and no matter what your personal preference is there will certainly be one type of designer clown that you WILL fall in love with, and personally there’s something about a midnight and naked paired together that just gets me.
2014 is going to be a great year for aquarists and, and prepare yourself because the clownfish are coming! They are going to be misbarred, spotty, and naked and they are all going to be beautiful. 2014 is going to be the year of the designer clownfish, so which one will be yours?
