Origins of Back to Reef

ELOS has been teasing the “Back to Reef” campaign for a few weeks now. Francois Neo describes the campaign as “getting back to the basics of what makes a reef tank successful”. ELOS has been around for over 2 decades and they have seen many changes and resurgences in how people manage their tanks. Patterns have emerged that correlate with successful tanks. Those basic cornerstone principles are

  • Proper lighting
  • Proper flow
  • Skimmer filtration
  • Regular water changes
  • Dosing calcium, magnesium, alk, and traces to keep water elements balanced
  • And more recently, control of NO3 and PO4

Introducing Mare

Over the years, a barrier to these cornerstones has emerged – dosing pump reliability. Consequently, the first phase of the “Back to Reef” campaign is the development of Mare, a Reef Management system. Mare works symbiotically with their Italian-manufactured pump and scale to auto calibrate dosing amounts based on weight, and not the time that the pump is running. With help from a scale that is accurate to 0.1 grams, the pump can automatically adjust to ensure that the correct amount of dosing liquids are administered each and every time.

Billing as the Dosatron and Pesatron, both pieces of equipment are handmade in Italy with a precision and elegance that matches the ELOS brand. They are designed to be used in combination with the ELOS line of dosing chemicals and test kits. Along with these components, an app has been developed that has options for AI learning for dosing changes or user inputs. The app will require the user to enter the test values for the dosing parameters. Over time, the app can automatically make corrections for coral uptake of macro elements, such as calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity. The more data that is entered, the more “smart” the app becomes.

These products will first be seen this weekend at MACNA 2022. Pre-orders will be available with delivery slated before or around Black Friday.
