Biota Aquariums is one of the few, and one of the largest, aquaculture companies in the world that stands on the forefront of the captive-breeding efforts in our marine ornamental industry.
They are leading the charge of producing fish that are bred with sustainable methods, making previously unobtainable fish obtainable by breeding notoriously finnicky eaters thrive on a dry food diet.
They’ve introduced innovative and cost-effective methods to bring more affordable price points to fish that were previously expensive to purchase.
I personally know how hard they’ve been preparing for MACNA – the Marine Aquarium Conference of North America , so I stopped by their booth to speak to their Fort Lauderdale facility manager, Jake Phillips. Our discussion entailed the unveiling of “Yurple” (one of twelve hybrid yellow and purple tangs), as well as the return of the blue hippo tang that was previously captive-bred by their Hawaiian facility manager, Kevin Barden, while he was with the University of Florida.
