Recently I made a day trip to the Aquarium at Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas. February is the slow season in the area, which meant that the visit was very pleasant with no crowds at all. This aquarium is one of the largest in the Southwest with over 1.5 million gallons of sea water, and what makes this aquarium unique is that it is housed in one of the three pyramid shaped buildings on the complex.
This was one of the cleanest and most well-kept aquariums I have ever visited. It was not the largest aquarium but had a good variety of specimens to see. The displays were very impressive, the specimens seem well cared for, the water was crystal clear, and all glass was clean for proper viewing.
The only downside for me was the limited open hours, 10 am – 4pm on week days. If traveling over the Galveston Ferry plan for delays. We arrived with only a few hours left, so plan accordingly when visiting. We were able to get through the entire aquarium at a casual pace within 2 hours with 1 hour to spare before closing.
If you are in the vicinity, plan a trip to Moody Gardens or even a vacation in the area; there are many other attractions also available in Galveston.
