Acanthophyllias are fairly rare and more rarely properly identified. I’ve seen many of these in fish stores that were masquerading as Scolymias rather than the rare coral they really are. Acanthophyllias are a LPS coral, and like most other sand-dwelling large polyp varieties, do not demand high amounts of light. They do best in lower flow areas due to their huge fleshy exteriors, and require stable alkalinity and calcium to do well. Acanthophyllias are commonly found quite large in size, and are usually prices pretty well for their beauty, so if you happen upon one your next trip to the LFS, don’t pass it up.
