A new African cichlid: Ptychochromis mainty

by | Nov 30, 2015 | Advanced Aquarist | 0 comments

Ptychochromis mainty is likely the same species as Ptychochromis sp “Tarantsy” (AKA Ptychochromis sp. “Fort Dauphin”) because these cichlids hail from Tarantsy River and Lake Tarantsy in the Fort Dauphin region of Madagascar.  This rare and sought-after species (assuming it is the same species as Ptychochromis sp “Tarantsy”) began to enter the aquarium trade circa the turn of the millennium and has been bred in captivity over the last decade.

Ptychochromis mainty is described in Zootaxa.
