We tend to view the foundation of the food pyramid from the base up, but overfishing fish at the very top can create serious imbalances at the bottom of the food chain as well. Researchers have found that overfishing apex predators like reef sharks causes a reduction in the number of herbivores (e.g. parrotfish, tangs, blennies) that keep reefs healthy by grazing algae.
