New Approach to Measuring Coral Growth Offers Valuable Tool for Reef Managers

Corals are traditionally monitored by linear measurements. In other words, scientists (like aquarists) take a ruler out to see how much a branch has grown within a given period of time. The problem is that we all know corals don't grow uniformly. One side of a colony may outpace the other side by a lot. The USGS has developed a new weight-based measuring approach to more accurately assess coral growth in situ, and it's already discovered some surprising growth patterns.

Time lapse video of complete reef tank tear-down

This video couldn't be any more timely. Both Shane Graber and myself have had to tear down our tanks in recent weeks (due to relocating or restarting our tanks). Both of us wanted to get the job done as quickly as possible so neither of us documented the process. Thankfully Keith Simonian thought otherwise.
