Video Footage of the Captive Bred Flamboyant Cuttlefish Displayed at MACNA

embedded content Some of the biggest news of MACNA 2013 was the announcement of the captive bred flamboyant cuttlefish from ReefGen. These gorgeous cephalopods represent the first ever captive bred flamboyant cuttles to be offered for sale to the aquarium community, and we got to see them all kinds of up close. The tree 1″ long cuttlefish were not shy by any means, many times striking at live mysis shrimp with their tentacles. They also performed many rhythmic color changes, which thy are known for, and thankfully we were to capture then on video, though I’ll admit that the quality is somewhat lacking. It was an exciting time for us, as we have a special spot in our hearts for these amazing creatures, and we’re glad to be able to share that with you today.

ORA Introduces Black Neon Dottyback

ORA’s new Black Neon Dottyback is a hybrid of two popular Red Sea species. Selected highlights from ORA’s announcement of a new captive-produced dottyback hybrid: “After our success with the Indigo Dottyback, the first hybrid dottyback available to aquarium hobbyists, we became interested in other dottyback hybridization possibilities.  We noted many similarities between the morphology and behavior of Neon and Springeri Dottybacks so we began our work.  After several attempts to create a harmonious pair we finally saw success.” “This hybrid’s appearance is strikingly similar to [Pseudochromis] dutoiti, which many believe is a subspecies of the Neon dottyback.  Could P. dutoiti be the result of natural hybridization between the Neon Dottyback and the Springeri dottyback?” For the full story, visit the ORA Blog.

Breeding and Propagation Workshop Coming to the Bay Area in October

The aquarium hobby has never before seen more active participation in the captive breeding of marine ornamental species, and that awareness is being helped along by at least two great conferences/workshops. The MBI Workshop has enjoyed several years of success, and the Bay Area Reefers Breeding and Propagation Workshop, which is our focus today, is really coming into its own with their second annual meeting coming up in October. Much like last year’s BAP, 2013 holds some great show content for fish breeding hobbyists. Joe Yaiullo and Todd Gardner will make up the guest speaker list. There will be some coral vendors at the workshop, who will be selling a bunch of aquacultured livestock. A generous raffle will round out the day’s activities. The single-day mini conference will take place on October 19th at the Chabot Community College, the same venue for last year’s event.

ORA Now Offering Premium Grade Black Snowflake Clownfish

Last year, Oceans Reefs & Aquariums unleashed their gorgeous Black Snowflake Clownfish onto the aquarium keeping world. At the time, only one grade of the fish was available, but that’s all changed. Now, ORA is also selling a premium grade version of their Black Snowflake, which have more striking patterns, more thorough white coloration, and several spots. Also announced with the new fish’s availability is lower wholesale pricing, which will help bring down retail costs to the consumer. According to ORA, it took several years of selective breeding to refine the coloration on this fish. And we can say that by judging from the pictures, that effort has really paid off. The fish are outright stunning and, in our opinions, far surpass the original ORA Snowflake clownfish in terms of beauty. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we’re sure most of you would agree. The new Premium Black Snowflake Clowns are showing up on availability lists this week, so get your store to order you a pair.
