9 Aquarium Christmas Gifts Your Reef-Keeping Friend Will Actually Use

by | Dec 15, 2025 | Equipment, Reef | 0 comments

Looking for a gift for the saltwater aquarium lover in your life? Most gift guides mention items like algae scrubbers and quirky tank ornaments, but aquarists usually have those basics covered—and anyway, most prefer picking their own tank decor and tools.

Getting someone a gift related to their hobby is always risky, but fear not! If you want to buy your aquarist friend or family member something nice for their tank but worry about committing a faux-pas, here are 9 Christmas gifts they’re guaranteed to actually want to use.

No gimmicky mugs and corny t-shirts here: all this stuff will genuinely put a smile on their face (and make their aquarist life a little easier).

Leak Detector

If the aquarist in your life is the safety-conscious type, they may already have one of these, especially if their home boasts a large system that would cause apocalyptic damage in case of failure. But trust me: most fishkeeping enthusiasts don’t have leak detectors installed, even though quick detection of a tank leak could take it from “disastrous” to “merely annoying” on the incident scale.

Remember that leak damage isn’t limited to the house—saltwater livestock in particular is incredibly expensive. If a tank drains, the financial loss could be in the thousands. So give your friend that leak detector, even if they didn’t ask for it! The best aquarium Christmas gifts are the ones that prevent disastrous damage.

Temperature Controller

You know what’s really not nice? When you leave home and the aquarium heater thermostat goes rogue, either cooking your fish or turning the tank from tropical to a winter wonderland. It happens more than we like to admit, and it can cause thousands in damage in reef tanks with expensive corals and other livestock. If your aquarist friend or family member is still relying on flimsy in-built thermostats, a temperature controller by a brand like Inkbird or Medusa will help them keep their beloved tank safe.

For the best bang for your buck, look for a controller that can connect to both a heating device and a cooling device (a fan or even a chiller) at the same time. Tank gets too warm? Heater off, fan on. Tank gets too cold? Heater on, fan off. Simple! And if something is really wrong, like in case of sensor failure, the controller can emit an audible alarm or even send a push notification to the owner’s phone.

Pocket pH Meter

Most aquarists are aware that the pH test strips used by home brewers and gardeners are usually not quite accurate enough to gauge the real status of our tanks. Responsible fishkeepers use liquid tests to check whether the water’s acidity level is still in order, but I think we can all agree they’re a bit of a hassle; having to lay out all the components, filling the test flask to exactly the right height, and then messing around with the dropper (was that a whole droplet, or a kind of half drop?!) is just annoying.

If your aquarist loved one is still messing around with traditional pH tests, relieve them of their misery with a pocket pH meter. Do avoid the $5 devices on Amazon and AliExpress to prevent disappointment, as they’re usually not very accurate. You’re better off getting a somewhat more pricey but higher-quality model, like the Apera PH60 or Hanna Instruments HI-98107.

Handheld TDS Meter

Spotted a pocket pH meter in your giftee’s aquarium cabinet? That rules the above out as a gift option, but confirms they like to test their aquarium water digitally. Try to find out if they also already have a TDS meter, because if they don’t, they might appreciate one. TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids, and measuring it gives us a quick overview of how much other stuff is in our aquarium water besides pure H2O. Aquarists use them to check whether the mineral levels in their tank still look okay, as well as to verify whether their reverse osmosis water is free of minerals as it should be.

HM Digital COM-80 Electrical Conductivity (EC) and Total Dissolved Solids Hydro Tester, 0-5000 ppm TDS Range, 1 ppm Resolution, +/- 2% Readout Accuracy Specialized Utilitarian Digital
  • Measures electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS). Exellent for nutrient testing.
  • Four scales: EC: µS, mS; TDS: ppm, ppt
  • Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC)
  • Water resistant

When it comes to handheld TDS meters, you can go cheaper than with a pH meter: they’re usually reasonably accurate. Combination pH and TDS meters also exist, with some devices purporting to test as many as ten parameters. Unfortunately, the pH readings on these are usually just not very good.

Aquarium Gloves

This aquarium Christmas gift guide is meant to highlight aquarium accessories that come in handy, but that your aquarist friend or family member is unlikely to already own. Here’s a great one: aquarium gloves. Sure, they may put on rubber gloves before handling stingy things like corals, and they may own a pair of algae scrubber gloves—but do they have waterproof ones that go past the elbow? I bet they don’t. In fact, they might be surprised when you gift them some, but the delightful feeling of dry, non-salted arms will probably quickly convert them to the Glove Gospel.

Don’t buy just any old long rubber gloves, as some materials can release unwanted chemicals into the aquarium. The gloves should be nitrile and free of powder or lubricant, preferably specifically labeled for aquarium use.

Aquarium Grabber Tool

This is a tool a lot of aquarists do already use, especially folks who keep very large and/or deep tanks. If you haven’t seen your fishkeeping loved one wielding one, then they will probably appreciate receiving it as a gift: I’ve never met any aquarist who doesn’t at least occasionally use theirs. I just whipped mine out today to retrieve a water testing flask that I dropped into my reef cube. Dry hands, baby!

Gloves are better for finicky maintenance tasks and handling fragile organisms, but for everything else, the grabber is king.

Aquarium Logbook

We all want to keep an aquarium logbook (it feels responsible! It gives us valuable data about our tank’s long-term health!), but few of us actually do. If your aquarist friend or family member is the organized type, why not gift them an easy way to keep track of water test results and other important parameters?

Folks who like to do things digitally might like a premium subscription to an aquarium logbook app like Aquarium Log. Analog aquarists who still appreciate good ol’ handwriting can instead keep a physical version next to their tank(s).

The Holy Grail: WiFi Aquarium Monitor

If the aquarium lover in your life has been particularly good this year and you’re looking to spend a little more, you can’t go wrong with a fancy WiFi aquarium monitor. All those pH meters, TDH meters, and temperature controllers are rolled into one and displayed both on a screen and on an app on the aquarist’s phone. This way, they can keep their eye on all the essential parameters even when they’re not home, which is a huge relief for folks who run large and expensive systems.

A quick look online will reveal aquarium monitors priced as low as $50, but there’s a catch: they’re just not very good. The electrodes tend to be cheap and the sensors prone to drift, meaning these devices can end up outputting misleading readings. The reason I’ve listed this gift as the holy grail is because a truly high-quality, reliable monitor will set you back at least $300. Heck, there are even controllers with built-in dosing that cost double, triple, or even more than that—if you’re willing to spend, the recipient will be thrilled.

Local Fish Store Gift Card

Really don’t know where to go with your aquarium Christmas gift, like if you have no idea which items your loved one already uses or doesn’t use for their aquarium? While a generic Amazon or Spotify gift card isn’t very exciting, a more specific one is a great way of showing how well you know the giftee.

If you know which pet or aquarium store they like to shop at, I pinky promise they’d love some free money to spend there. We aquarists always have our eye on some gadget or another—and even when we don’t, all those fish and corals still have to eat.
