Photographic evidence of two rabbitfishes working together as a team already exists, but this fascinating behavior is only now being extensively researched and appreciated. A new open-access study published in Nature shows in great detail the marvelous working partnership between pairs of rabbitfish.

This is a relevant research we previously reported. Reef fish may pair up simply to act as spotters for their companion. When you see two fish swimming together, it’s not safe to always assume they’re mated pairs.

The Fish Health Monitor uses two cameras, linked to a computer, to track the movements of fish in aquariums in three dimensions. Movement for healthy fish are programmed into the system, and if a fish shows deviations from these parameters the computer detects this and give a health ‘score’.

It’s rather amazing that this big, bright ghostly blue-white, shallow-water species is only now documented by science, but judging by what fisherman say, the species is very elusive.
