By all accounts, 2018 was a bit of a down year for corals. When people weren’t busy carving their names into them, they were busy wiping them from the planet with climate change.
Yeah, it’s not the greatest time to be a coral.…

It’s mid-December, which means that it’s finally time to recap the year in coral reefs. 2018 brought with it an embarrassment of riches when it came to juicy reef discoveries. There were plenty of strange corals sighted, along with an overwhelming variety of newly described fishes, but I’ll be featuring those in separate posts.…

The little Lipogramma basslets are proving to be one of the most diverse and fascinating groups of reef fishes in the Caribbean. The dozen or so species in this genus (two of which were just described back in January) present an array of eye-catching color, correlating with a complex evolutionary history driven by geographically and ecologically induced patterns of speciation.…

There’s a new species of tiny, deepwater dartfish described from Japan… Navigobius asayake, the Sunrise Dartfish. It’s just the fifth species to be named in this obscure little genus, but let’s take a moment to delve further into this “discovery”.…

The continued guppification of the clownfish shows no sign of slowing down, and now there’s an interesting new color variety to add to the mix. Similan Farm Clownfish—a Thailand-based fish breeder that seems to specialize in all things Amphiprion—recently shared a tantalizing clip of their “Super Yellow Percula”, a variant that features an intriguing mix of phenotypic traits.…

Razorfishes are an uncommonly encountered group of wrasses specialized for a life out on open sand flats. The most diverse of these are those in the genus Iniistius, which presently has 22 recognized species, some of which are exquisitely colorful.…

2018 has been an exciting year for perchlet fans. Back in May, we were introduced to an exquisite new species from Easter Island, Plectranthias ahiahiata. August saw the undescribed “Ubiquitous Perchlet” make its way into the aquarium trade out of the Philippines.…
