Aquascaping is a challenge in itself. The ability to place rocks in an aquarium in a way that looks appealing, that provides plenty of surface area for the planting of corals, that offers hiding spots for the fish, and that doesn't look unnatural -- it's almost too much to consider. If all else fails, I'd strongly urge you to find a female to add her perspective because for some reason they have an incredible knack for this task. Ask your spouse, your significant other, or even a female friend for their input... trust me. You want to avoid a man-made pile (brickwork looking), as well as straight horizontal lines since these aren't common in nature. With your counterpart chiming in, you may only need to make a couple of tiny changes to get a great looking reef.Once the aquascape has been perfected with nooks, crannies, tunnels, overhangs and interesting structures, it is possible that all your hard work can come crashing down by AquaNerd | Oct 18, 2013 | Corals, Eye Candy
How much would you drop on a mushroom coral? Ten bucks? How about $20? Is fifty bucks pushing the limit? What if I told you there was one out there being sold for a four figure price tag? You heard me right, a mushroom coral in the thousands of dollars. At Reef-A-Palooza this past weekend, one vendor had an absolutely jawdropping mushroom coral on display with a reported price tag of somewhere near $5000. The ultra high end mushroom coral, called the Jawbreaker mushroom, is undoubtedly a keystone piece from the wildly colorful and unique collection from Sexy Corals by Matthew Stansbery | Oct 16, 2013 | Corals, Equipment, Events, Industry
Many of us are familiar with the large dry-good displays of Dirk’s The Real Reefers Store as he can set up at events and conferences easily taking up an entire wall. Dirk was recently robbed and had his entire stock and truck stolen.… by AquaNerd | Oct 14, 2013 | Corals, Equipment, Opinion, Tanks
If you truly value any of your corals, especially the rare and expensive ones, you should give them away for free. What?!? Does that really make sense? Sure it does, if you follow this reasoning. If you have some rare coral and don’t spread it around to your closest friends, then you run the risk of never seeing it again if you encounter some catastrophic aquarium wipeout. By giving out free frags, you ensure that the coral strain will continue on despite your success with your own aquarium. While it may not make a whole lot of sense to give away something you could make a little cash on, you ensure that you don’t lose out on a coral entirely. So many times, we’ve heard of stunning tanks taking a quick nose dive with one of a kind livestock going with them. For big, mature tanks that have been around for a while, chances are there are frags of each of those corals somewhere in the local community. And chances are, if a tank like that goes down, the locals would be more than willing to help restock that setup by Dan Rigle | Oct 10, 2013 | Corals, Eye Candy
Like Joe the plumber, Joe the coral also gets less attention then deserved. This highly pigmented and fast growing Acropora tenius is amazing in every way but gets little attention. The image was taken from above with a photo box to gain access to the highly pigmented...
