Do you want a degree in Aquarium Science?

Davidson County Community College in Thomasville, North Carolina, becomes the second school to offer an Aquarium Science degree.

Back in 2009, Kenneth Wingerter thoroughly reviewed the Oregon Coast Community College’s Aquarium Science program and talked at length about everything someone would learn as they go through the curriculum.  Now a second community college has instituted an Aquarium Science program: Davidson County Community College in Thomasville, North Carolina.

DCCC describes the new curriculum thusly:

“This program is designed to help students become entry-level aquarists, working with marine and aquatic life found at public aquaria, zoological parks and research facilities throughout the world. Students may complete up to two internships at public aquarium partners where they will enjoy hands-on experiences working with the care and husbandry of aquatic species as well as working to educate the public. These internships also allow the student to network and apply best practices learned in the classroom.”

DCC is partnering with five North Carolina aquariums: Discovery Place (Charlotte), Fort Fisher, Pine Knolls Shores, Roanoke Island, and SciQuarium (part of Greensboro Science Center) to give students ample opportunities to work in the industry.

When completed, the graduate will hold an Associate in Applied Science degree and the program begins Fall 2013.  Informational presentations about the new program will be held in Room 110 of the Conference Center on the Davidson Campus at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14 and Thursday, May 16.  One can also contact Amy Kepley at 336.224.4668 or [email protected] for more information as well.
