What are some ways to test the amount of Phytoplankton in an aquarium system?

How do I go about testing "density" of phyto in the water?

Are there any tests or devices?

Anyone?

I believe this is something that's way beyond what hobbyists can do. You could try PM ing billsreef over on the LIRA forum at RC. He's a marine biologist and runs a lab at Stonybrook.

there are but they are well out of the reach of your average hobbyist. Most phyto culturing density is done using a stick. It's a visual test and needs to be very dense.

I can pretty tell you there is phytoplankton of some sort in your system but no where near what is seen in the wild for many reasons.
