I suspected there was some type of crab or shrimp in my tank that wasn't suppose to be there since i never introduced any because i found a claw in the sandbed a few months ago... today, randomly i caught the culprit! my main lights were off and i turned it on only to check on my tank before i went to bed...

what exactly is this? is this a crab? LOL

i haven't lost any corals for the past 6 months except for a few yumas (which was probably because of my water quality)... as for fish.. i lost a few but i think that was more to do with ick (they were looking pretty sick before they disappeared)

so i don't think i've lost any fish or corals... i've only seen him once in 6 months lol... not sure how i am going to get this guy out.. any ideas?

Its probably a gorilla crab. Although it looks a little stocky. Take a look at the pincers, are they sharp and pointy or dull like an emerald crabs? Your best bet is to get it out of there, if it has sharp pincers then it is a gorilla and its just a matter of time before he starts murdering your fish. Tongs may not work. I've had success putting a little bit of food in the bottom of a narrow glass bottle and placing the bottle vertically in the tank. They can't get traction on glass with their feet and will be stuck. Check the trap every 20 minutes or so or leave it overnight. The crab is most likely very reclusive with lights on.

I cant see anything, take the crab out, take a better pic, let everyone else here take a better look at it, most crabs do more harm than good.

Here is the thing based on what I learned from an invert specialist -

Most crabs are predators, and most crabs will eat the things that we want to keep in our tanks.

That said, a few are not and are okay to have - until they develop a taste for those things we want to keep in our tanks because they have never been told that they are not supposed to want to eat these things....

However, catching them can be a bit tricky. If you want to keep everything in your tank just so, best bet is to remove him. On the other hand, he is very cool-looking, may be hard to catch, and may not do that much damage - is it worth it to keep him and consider him one of your pets as well? That is your call.

Good chance he'll eat (or at least pick at it ) something you love at some point, if not sooner, then later.

The food in a bottle trick works for many. I've been advised more than once that skewering them with a sharp knitting needle, for example (ala spear-fishing) could work. I have never tried it myself.

also, just so you know, these animals are EXTREMELY difficult to identify. Suffice to say, it belongs to a group of mostly predators.

Good luck!

if he's been in there for 6 mos he is eating something - any missing fish? The sump is a good place for him. They are not so difficult to catch. I caught mine by using a pint beer glass slightly tilted and leaning against a rock with some raw shrimp inside. Leave it overnight and you should have him in the am. Good luck

in the past 6 months i've lost one goby which died a few days ago from ick, a purple tang which i didn't acclimate properly and after the 2nd day disappeared, and one anerexic anthia that i had for 3 months (she would never eat, when i put food in, it would just look at it and then run away back to it's cave)... i lost 3 yuma mushroms that melted away on me.... the only thing that i could imagine it eating is flake flood i put in (i kindof overfeed my fish) and maybe some snails?

i'll try to glass trick will and it's about 2inches long chanman

It looks like a xanthid or something in a related crab family. They are opportunistic feeders.

I wonder... how many people have seen a crab actually catch a healthy fast-moving fish? Or even a sleeping one?
