How many people here have 1000watt bulbs for there reef.

I have a friend that has a 1000Watt bulb on his tank along with 2 more 400watt bulbs. It is a full SPS tank. Just wondered if anyone else has this insane lighting on there tank.

Hey Crash

That is a lot of light.

If you had a 4 foot tank, would you either:

(A) use 4x400w 20Ks
or
(B) use 1x1000w 20K and 2x400w 20Ks
or
(C) use 2x1000w 20Ks

I'd go with 2 x 400 6500k, 2 x 400 10-12000k,
with VHO actinics(if you must have the blue)

or, if you must go the "more power" route...

2 x 400 6500-10000k, and 1 1000w 10000k, with 4 x 110vho actinics

The 2nd one is the setup for my 5', 98gln(which isn't completed, yet).

Do you guys have pH issues with that much light?

More light means more photosynthesis which means less CO2 which means high pH. During the night the fish respirate and there is no mechanism to absorb the CO2 so it increases thus yielding a lower pH. Does this happen to you?

On my 75g I have dual 400W 10K and with a calcium reactor my morning pH is a low of 7.9 and in the evening it's 8.35.

Do you add extra aeration to help stabilise pH?

I have been looking into 1000W MHs for my reef, but am not sure if I will have the room (have you seen the size of these bulbs?) and also can't decide if I want to put up with that much heat.

I have a 1000w mh. look on reef central.
under animal trading forum lots of sps for
sale posted by crash. you will see my
tank it is very full of sps and doing well.
They love this light plus I have a dual 400w
hqi pfo ballast orsam 20k bulbs and 4 110 vho actinics. I might be adding another dual 400w eye pfo ballast with 65ks. totals watts will be over 3000w
on a 166g tank. No chiller. Temp stays at
79-81 deg.

The bulb is about the size of a football. I must say my friends tank looks like part of an actual reef.

My ph is 8.10 in the mornig. Just before I turn my lights out my ph is 8.17
my temp in the morning is 79 at night it is
79.8 NO CHILLER.

I have a 5' tank 24" wide 25" tall.
I have a new tank coming 4' long 38" wide
22" tall. My lighting on this will change a
little. 1 1000w mh 6 400w. Can't wait to get it. I am putting two 3600 amp master on it. Dolphin put amp master motor on bigger models. 3600 gph at 1.2 amps only $10 more.
