If it is not in your tank and has been sitting outside for months on end in the freezing cold of winter. Likely it is dead then.

If it is in your tank, then it is not dead, but may not be very full of life either. So, if the rock is in your tank, it is working on building bacteria and beneficial organisms to help with the filtration cycle.

black on the rock = dead but does not mean it will stay like that forever, it can be saved. Elevate it above your sand bed/substrate on a piece of base rock and it will regain life.
