Def rust , I had the same issue with my mag5!!! It may be what nuked my first tank!! I believe the mag pumps have a pond model and a more saltwater resistant model but I'm not sure, I would try to replace those screws with nylon ones if you could !!! This is why I went eheim

I would like to go eheim prob is I built my sump with just enough room to fit the mag . stupid me I only have 3" of width . I think I might be able to get away with Eheim Compact+ 3000.

Ok called them , I was told that in a salt water aplication I need to take apart the motor and clean it every 4 to 6 weeks and soak impellar in vinegar over night. All they offered was to replace the screws for me. I am gonna have to buy this Buy the eheim compact 3000 and hope it fits in my sump.

I am wondering how the Eheim would be at 5" head pressure . I am gonna take pump apart and see what the impellar looks like and go to loews and get nylon screws . If impellar is rusted ill have get new pump. Does anyone have the Ehiem 3000 compact?

Well went to home depot, leows and local hardware store no matching nylon screws . I really would love to just get the screws . I took apart pump got all the rust off cleaned screws. I wonder if the Eheim would run my chiller , gfo reactor and mtd?

Can rust really make or create a problem for a tank? I thought someone said gfo is basically rust?

In the wild it can do serious damage. In the close confines of OU systems I coul see it being an issue if a large enough concentration was present.

GFO is rusted iron. Issue is steel is a makeup of iron and other ingredients which can be toxic in our tanks.

mag pumps are known to have rusty screws. not sure why people still buys them.
