You need to take a look at J.E.N. Veron's 3 book set Corals of the World. It has a lot of information on distinguishing characteristics, however it is definately an expert level book.

I would really like to but its expensive to buy. I was actually hoping Deanos could find a link to a report based somewhat on it or a posting of some of its pages. His last link has some diagrams from it.
