hi folks.
this is my mini experiment with a mixed reef Low Energy Consumption was the main drive for me to re-do my tank from going FOWLR for a while.
it is currently running for 3 months as a reef.
I started with 2 250W MH set up & a ton of gadgets that drove my LIPA bill to $400.
the tank is now running ate 260 kw/h (600 Watts) without the heater turning on as seen on my kill a watt. I have noticed my corals like the tank on the cooler side about 77-77.5 degrees. I have managed to keep some SPS in the middle of the tank where there are 4X54W T5's supplying the light run by IC 660 ballast. My tank seems to thrive because of flow from a Reeflo Snapper (98w) & two Vortech pumps in the tank, the only other thing that runs 24/7 is the skimmer (35w). translating to $150 LIPA Bill. hope this post helps some folks trying to justify keeping up with the hobby & not throw in the towel because of LIPA cost. :irked:

great thread and great idea for your tank!
Please keep us updated with the growth and any additions.
I was going to do this with my tank, but have taken it down so I won't be able to join in, in the low E tank experiment. I might try this with a smaller tank in the mean time.

How did you get 260KW from 600W of consumption?

dont know Pierce,
everything is plugged into the ReefKeeper & that I plugged into the Kill A Watt.
All the pumps that run 24/7 barely make 160W, I think my heaters cost me more to run than my lights.
it might be a glitch, since it should be around 600 kwh too?

i think you can definitely do it. Good flow is key. I've seen guys have plenty of nice tanks that dont require alot of light. My tank goes down to 74 degrees on a nightly basis and does fine.

hahaha not at all :D

everythings lookin GREAT in your tank and of course the aquascape is pro :chefico::)

most frags are from fellow MR & LIRA members, just had the pleasure of meeting kewlfish in queens, he hooked me & Gus up big time. Most fish are from FOWLR (with Ikea LEDS) survivors & Pets W.

do let me know if you are fragging anything from your system..... that is not over $100/inch.... LOL
