Is your sushi radioactive? This serving plate can tell.

Is your sushi radioactive? This serving plate can tell.

The Fukushima Plate redefines “radioactive glow”

Following the post-earthquake 2011 nuclear meltdown and subsequent release of radioactive materials into Japan’s coastal waters, there is ongoing fear about contaminated foods.

Nils Ferber designed the Fukushima Plate to detect and visualize the radiation levels of the food it is serving.  Three concentric OLED rings light up depending on the detected radiation level:  No lit rings means no radiation.  One to two lit white rings tell diners radiation is detected but within safe consumption levels.  The third red ring warns diners about dangerous levels of radiation.

While we highly doubt this product has any mass market practicality (even in niche luxury markets), it’s a cool if not ominous design concept.
