When I got our aquacultured (captive bred) yellow tangs from Segrest farms I was in a constant state of awe that we got 3 of the first ever bred. I would go into our store and stare at them and think about the researchers that worked on this project for years and how... by ReefBum | Feb 7, 2019 | Equipment, Reef, Science
By Keith Berkelhamer, Owner of ReefBum, LLC, & Tristan Wilson, Owner of Pax Bellum, LLC Keeping Chaeto in an algae reactor such as a Pax Bellum ARID is a great way to control nutrients and increase water clarity in a reef tank. It also balances pH by taking up excess CO2 and increases dissolved oxygen. To take advantage of these benefits it is very important to keep Chaeto alive and well. Here are some tips or best practices on how to optimize Chaeto growth and to prevent it from crashing. The Guidelines…. Provide sufficient flow through the reactor with a strong enough pump. Record flow by timing how long it takes for the outflow to fill a known volume. Don’t have the reactor draw water from a by Admin | Feb 5, 2019 | Events

One day, I was browsing facebook when I went to one of my groups and saw a post by Reinaldo of Pirates Reef Corals that showed off some amazing acroporas. Funny part was that I have the EXACT same corals, and while they looked great in my tank, he was pulling some... by Admin | Feb 4, 2019 | Fish, Photography
It’s been a while since I’ve seen Oxymonacanthus longirostris in the wild, but the first thing that struck me was just how hard they are to spot, especially for a fish that’s bright orange and... by AquaNerd | Feb 3, 2019 | Conservation, Corals, Reef
One of the most wondrous living things on earth is coral. Humans view its diversity and hues as a gorgeous, underwater decoration. But, it is a living organism that supports the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of species in the underwater ecosystem. Man may appreciate its wonder, but our destructive tendencies are harming this vital member of the oceans and seas. Here’s what you need to know about the grave threats facing coral reefs. If we don’t act soon, we may destroy these beautiful pieces of the earth. What Exactly Is Coral? We realize that the majority of our readers know what coral is but for those of you that don’t or need a refresher… Corals are relatives of the sea anemone. They are all made by AquaNerd | Feb 2, 2019 | Corals
Since its introduction to the reef aquarium hobby, the Walt Disney acropora has become a household name and a must-have piece for acropora collectors. The semi-recent surge of multi-colored rainbow tenuis that seems to have started with the Walt Disney, has captivated a large portion of aquarists to keeping this specific species of coral, despite its challenges. The Walt Disney, in perfect coloration, flaunts a beautiful green base, pink radial corallites, bright yellow polyps with a deep blue axial corallite. When acclimated to much higher light (>800 par), the coral becomes primarily pink in color and becomes almost unrecognizable to one kept in a normal environment. Having owned this coral for 2 years, I have found it best to maintain parameters as follows: Calcium: 450ppm by Admin | Feb 1, 2019 | Fish, Science
A piece of research published in the journal Marine Biology asked just that question. A student, Jacob Eurich from UC Santa Barbara, was studying damsels in the Coral Triangle region, Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea to be exact, when he made some interesting...
