For this video, I wanted to share a trip I took a few months ago to check out my friends at T.F.T Distributors' new facility in Weston, Florida. First of all, huge thanks to T.F.T for allowing me to come in after hours to shoot this quick footage. I went there to meet up with my friends John Miller of Mad Reefer, Chris Portale of The Fish Store, and Shane Lafrenere of 24/7 Aquariums and while we were there, I went ahead and asked for some tips on selecting a good specimen of fish, including what to look for and what to avoid. http://bit.ly/newsJeremy132 Peter- Waterbox Aquariums has redesigned their popular MARINE series aquariums to create the MARINE X with new features aquarium hobbyists will love. The traditional classification of corals is dead, says Prof Andrew Baird, from James Cook University, who led a recent scientific journey along the Great Barrier Reef, uncovering treasure troves of new, unidentified coral species. New molecular tools allow us to reinvent a new classification system on the ashes of the old. Hence, the name we have given to the research: Project Phoenix, he said. These are exciting times to be a coral taxonomist. What this means, essentially, is that new methods of DNA testing can target regions of the coral genome that are relevant to the specific research interests, allowing scientists to zero in on novel variants and better differentiate species. Many current coral species are predicted to turn into multiple true species, linked by their actual DNA profiles rather than physical appearance. Aquarists, divers, marine biologists: Be ready to have all your existing reference works on stony coral genera and species become obsolete. Dr. Andrea Quattrini, curator of corals at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, developed the new genetic tool. She says it provides a way forward with plans to secure the future of coral reefs. http://bit.ly/newsJeremy131 Peter- Talks with Sicce Tip of the Week: If you are going into or already using one of the systems we talk about this week, take a look at a really clever tool we noticed over on Melev's Reef. He is offering an acrylic heater hanging bracket. Clever design that can really help optimize some space in your sump. http://bit.ly/131JeremyTOW Main Topic: Tank Size Selection: Upgrade or add to the collection Pt. 2 Last week we talked Pico and Nano systems, this week we jump into standard, large and xl tanks. For some sea anemones, however, it's actually quite literal. When starlet sea anemones eat more food, they sprout extra arms, according to a study published last week in Nature Communications. They are the first known species to grow entirely new limbs in response to consumption of food. These sea anemones show us that it is possible that nutrients are not converted into excess fat storage as it is the case in all mammals but instead transformed into a new body structure. http://bit.ly/newsJeremy130 Main Topic: Tank Size Selection: Upgrade or add to the collection Pt. 1 Where to start, upgrade, downsize or even add a new system. Big or Small? Let's talk tanks. While this topic is aimed at beginners, it should have something for everyone. It is always a fun topic to discuss and there are some great insights to the thought that can go into making a size selection. I took a look at our notes from the last time we talked about this all the way back in episodes 5 and 6 and boy have we progressed in our style and notes!!! Some of the info is the same and some has changed but, in any case, I thought this would be a great topic to go over again and see what's new.
