In contrast to most other species, reef-dwelling parrotfish put on weight and their populations boomed in the wake of severe coral bleaching. In the damaged areas of the reefs, the study found that parrotfish populations increased in number by between two and eight times, and individual fish were about 20% larger than those in unbleached sections. Almost every other species of fish was in sharp decline in the bleached areas. http://bit.ly/newsJeremy94 Listener Call Jake from Bellingham Wa. Is having issues with his SPS, STN'ing. Captive-bred mandarins represent a complete shift in the husbandry of these often difficult-to-keep fishes; while they are still slow, methodical, bottom-picking substrate feeders,captive-bred mandarins will arrive eating inanimate pellet feeds when properly weaned during the early rearing phases. Dragonet breeding is a challenging project that the dedicated home aquarist can take on, and with only Synchiropus splendidus in active commercial cultivation at the moment, there is an opportunity for several other species (including the less-seen Red Mandarin) to be produced as captive-bred offerings. http://bit.ly/newsJeremy92 Peter- Federal officials announced plans Monday to raise $100 million to fund projects to restore seven significant coral reef sites in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Mission: Iconic Reefs calls for restoring nearly 70 acres (28 hectares) of the Florida Reef Tract, one of the largest strategies ever proposed for coral restoration, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. http://bit.ly/newsPeter92 Listener Call Big T from Ma. In this video we explore one approach, which aims to replenish damaged reefs using using coral larvae bred in the lab. Listener shoutout to Rasmus Johansson http://bit.ly/newsPeter91 https://go.nature.com/33KKFs5 Jeremy- Young fish can be drawn to degraded coral reefs by loudspeakers playing the sounds of healthy reefs, according to new research published today in Nature Communications. This one came in from a number of listeners so here is a shout out to Reef News Wifey Laurie C, Heather Macwhinnie and Josh O Thanksy'all. http://bit.ly/newsJeremy91 Tip of the Week Keep your hands out of the tank as much as possible. Let your tank do it's thing. This will reduce the amount oils from your hands that are introduced to the tank. Main Topic: Go Rabbit, Go Rabbit, GO... Rabbitfish and Foxface are awesome options for reef tanks. They are prodigious grazers, peaceful tankmates, interesting to observe, fairly affordable and a bit outside the usual suspects for a reef tank. All of these characteristics make them ideal for the reefer looking for a unique addition to their system. Researchers at Australia's Southern Cross University are now preparing to put the latest into action, with millions of turbo-charged coral babies being readied to take root in the reef's most degraded areas. http://bit.ly/newsJeremy90 Peter- The relationship between bacteria and Corals has recently become a hot topic on Reef2Reef as a result of a research paper recently published in the Nature journal. The study estimates that about 1/3 of all corals worldwide are infected with this newly discovered bacterium which researchers named, Candidatus Aquarickettsia rohweri. The bacterium can be found in a number of corals that we commonly keep in our aquariums including, Acropora, Goniopora, Montipora, Seriatopora and Stylophora species. Additionally, it can also be found in anemones. Researches also discovered the bacterium can be transmitted through coral eating parasitic snails and transported through seawater whereby it can potentially infect corals when tissue damage is present. http://bit.ly/newsPeter90 Main Topic: ORA, ORA, ORA.... An invasive chimera, the kraken reef and BristlewormMania. Jeremy is planning out his aquascape and seeing some great colors develop in the big tank. The former Navy fuel barge and its monstrous passenger were placed underwater in order to jumpstart a new coral ecosystem, while also serving as a cutting-edge education center for marine researchers and local students from the surrounding British Virgin Islands. The project is titled the BVI Art Reef, and aims to use sculptures like the porous kraken as a base to grow transplanted coral. http://bit.ly/newsJeremy88 Peter- A new article published in the journal Scientific Reports reveals 44% of the colonies of Didemnum vexillum -a marine invertebrate tagged as invasive species- in the Ebro Delta (Tarragona, Spain) are formed by gene chimera, that is, cells with different gene pool. According to the study, this ability to create chimera could be a determining factor to promote genetic diversity and the colonizing success of this exotic species in natural ecosystems worldwide. http://bit.ly/newsPeter88 Main Topic: Welcome to BristlewormMania: Bristleworms (or bristle worms) are segmented worms with bristly tufts extending from each of their segments. They can grow very largeup to 24 inches in a tankbut most are between one and six inches long. They are nocturnal and tend to stay in or under live rock or in the your substrate. You may never see a bristleworm in your tank unless you look for them at night with a flashlight or expose them by moving a rock or displacing the substrate.
