Hygger Aquarium is a common brand in the aquarium industry since 2018. They offer products for freshwater, planted, and saltwater aquariums. My very first engagement with Hygger was with the 2 newest wavemaker pumps they sent me to review, the Circulation Wavemaker pump (gyre) and the Flow One. In this article I will be discussing the larger: 25W Flow One.

The Flow One is a 24V DC wavemaker that is a low profile, wide fan-based pump. The size and flow rate are impressive with the necessary control settings without too many bells and whistles. The HG165-25W is rated for maximum flow rate of 2642 gph/10000L and ideal for a 70-120 gallon tank. I tend to oversize when I select equipment so I don have to run them at max capacity.

The contents include:

  1. Controller
  2. Pump head w/ magnetic mount
  3. Power brick & cord
  4. Instruction manual
  5. Foam guard

The controller includes 4 wave modes by Pressing “M” (constant, classic, sine and random), (+/-) intensity adjustments, a “F” Feed pause, and a sensor for night detection.

Chose the wave mode that suits your livestock needs.  Throw some food in the water to see what level of turbulence you want.  Remember not to create direct laminar flow on any livestock.

The setup is pretty straight forward, but wire management can be a challenge. You may want to use some additional plastic cord holders that are clasping and non-permanent for serviceability.

Initial Observations

I have been running this wavemaker in my standard 125g SPS system for 1 month. It is mounted near the top center-left to create a rotational flow front to back since the coral have over grown so much, blocking much of the gyre flow from the sides.  If you do use the included foam guard, you’ll need to perform weekly cleaning, or else it will clog and reduce the flow.  I have since removed it since I don’t have any anemones or small fish I need to worry about.

I will have to revisit this after 6 months of use for an extended review as I typically do.  The key factor for me is longevity for the price.  Many products will typically work as designed but quality and life of the product is what makes it stand out.  Things I will look for are the initial pump head failure due to water penetration or some electronic failure in the system.
