It seems there is no separating reefs and yarn. From the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef to the Harlem Knitting Circle’s Satellite Reef, the ability to use complex patterns to replicate the textures and patterns from the reef has been adopted by many knitting circles. This is the first outdoor installation that we’ve seen and it clearly took some planning to pull off. Located in San Mateo, the construction of the squid was fully documented here, and involved a huge amount of yarn and measurements in order to guarantee a good fit. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that something like this can be used a la Flaming Cactus to add color and design to common city installations.
