‘Coral City Camera’ @ Design Miami 2019

For Design Miami 2019/, we debuted a preview of the ‘Coral City Camera’, a 360° live stream underwater camera located at our collaborative research site with NOAA/ University of Miami’s ACCRETE Lab. The CCC aims to supplement our urban coral research with real-time scientific data and offer a source of natural wonderment to the public, with the live stream officially going live in February 2020. The output of the camera will be broadcast into public schools across Florida through a partnership with the Everglades Foundation. This initiative will reach over 100,000 students, teaching observers to work as citizen scientists with a curriculum that integrates the CCC live stream across 21 school districts. The implementation and associated outreach of the ‘Coral City Camera’ are made possible with the support of Bas Fisher Invitational & the Bridge Initiative under National Endowment for the Arts & Knight Foundation grants. In this video we explore one approach, which aims to replenish damaged reefs using using coral larvae bred in the lab. Listener shoutout to Rasmus Johansson http://bit.ly/newsPeter91 https://go.nature.com/33KKFs5 Jeremy- Young fish can be drawn to degraded coral reefs by loudspeakers playing the sounds of healthy reefs, according to new research published today in Nature Communications. This one came in from a number of listeners so here is a shout out to Reef News Wifey Laurie C, Heather Macwhinnie and Josh O Thanksy'all. http://bit.ly/newsJeremy91 Tip of the Week Keep your hands out of the tank as much as possible. Let your tank do it's thing. This will reduce the amount oils from your hands that are introduced to the tank. Main Topic: Go Rabbit, Go Rabbit, GO... Rabbitfish and Foxface are awesome options for reef tanks. They are prodigious grazers, peaceful tankmates, interesting to observe, fairly affordable and a bit outside the usual suspects for a reef tank. All of these characteristics make them ideal for the reefer looking for a unique addition to their system. Scientists are Studying the Biological Relationship Between Corals and Marine Bacteria

The relationship between bacteria and Corals has recently become a hot topic on Reef2Reef as a result of a research paper recently published in the Nature journal. The study estimates that about 1/3 of all corals worldwide are infected with this newly discovered bacterium which researchers named,Candidatus Aquarickettsia rohweri. The bacterium can be found in a number of corals that we commonly keep in our aquariums including, Acropora, Goniopora, Montipora, Seriatopora and Stylophora species. Additionally, it can also be found in anemones. Researches also discovered the bacterium can be transmitted through coral eating parasitic snails and transported through seawater whereby it can potentially infect corals where tissue damage is present. Corals that are infected with Candidatus Aquarickettsia rohweri exhibit little to no growth. Researchers hypothesize the
