Well isn’t this just the scariest thing to behold? A fisherman in Fort Pierce, Florida hauled up a massive mantis shrimp while doing a little nighttime angling. It appears as though the stomatopod was hooked through the tail (there is a treble hook just above the tail in other photos posted online), and it was estimated to be approximately 18 inches. When the shrimp was pulled up onto the dock, it was striking at its own tail, presumably in an attempt to escape capture. So the fisherman grabbed it by its back like a lobster, trying every way to avoid the business end of the very dangerous critter.Scientists haven’t been able to identify the species just yet, but they are supposedly pouring over the images that have been posted online in order to get an idea of exactly what was caught.Images and story pulled from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Conservative Commission. by AquaNerd | Sep 3, 2014 | Equipment, MACNA, Science

We love aquarium related workshops, whether they be some sort of husbandry demo, a product showcase, or anything that spreads the good word of the hobby. We especially love them when the events are local. Such is the case for a Red Sea workshop that will be hosted at one of our favorite Houston area fish stores, FJW Aquarium. The event is still a little ways away, being hosted on September 20th from noon to 4pm. Like many events, this workshop will also feature awesome deals on livestock and equipment, as well as raffle prizes and other attractions that will bring in local hobbyists in droves. As we said, the workshop will take place at FJW Aquarium, located at 3839 Mangum Road in Houston, Texas. More details about the event will unfold on the FJW Facebook announcement, linked to above. A representative, or representatives, from Red Sea will be in-house doling out the goods on all of their latest gear, presenting a great opportunity for users to become more familiar with their dosing systems and other popular products. by AquaNerd | Jul 28, 2014 | Equipment, Fish, Industry, Science, Tanks
Innovative Marine is living up to their namesake this week with the announcement of the most well-equipped all-in-one nano aquariums on the market. They are bolstering their Nuvo Fusion lineup, going a little smaller to target those hobbyists who enjoy a beautiful yet insanely functional desktop sized aquarium. The new models will include the Fusion Nano 10 and 20, and despite their size, they will enjoy all of the same features of their larger brethren. That means a 10 and 20 gallon tank with low iron glass (an industry first as far as we know), mesh screen top to keep fish in, built-in overflows, a rubber leveling mat, and some impressive rear chamber filtration. And you know what the real shocker is…the tanks start at just $99. But the fun doesn’t stop there. As IM has done in the past with other aquariums, the lineup has been given access to some really awesome third-party upgrades.
