A UV Sterilizer For a Reef Tank?

Reef keepers have long debated whether the constant use of a UV sterlizer is helpful or harmful to a saltwater reef tank. In essence, a UV sterilizer has a UV bulb in a water tight compartment that will kill or zap undesirables in the water that pass through the unit. Undesirables include free floating algae spores, parasites and troublesome bacteria such as heterotrophic bacteria, which are considered “scavenger” bacteria and can bloom, causing cloudy water. To UV or Not to UV? A UV will not kill beneficial bacteria that are in the sand bed and live rock since they are not free floating. However, the key question is whether the sterilizer will also kill free floating microorganisms that are beneficial to corals? Are the benefits worth this

GHL Presents an all new 6E-PAB Powerbar

The perfect and safe functioning of the powerbars in an aquarium controller system is of essential importance. A malfunction of the powerbar can lead to significant losses in aquarium livestock. Therefore, it is critical to have the best aquarium controller equipment available. The new and improved GHL Powerbars feature on/off switching of electrical loads for components such as heaters, cooling devices, solenoid valves for CO2control, or stream pumps. GHL Powerbars are specifically designed for use with their Profilux aquarium controllers. GHL uses components are that are UL-certified and flame retardant. The powebars can be easily mounted to about any surface with the mounting holes for easy instillation. Mounting holes are conveniently placed on the side or back (depending on the model) for easy installation

Dosing Nitrates to Eliminate Cyano?

What? Dosing nitrates to get rid of cyano? A common piece of advice when battling Cyanobacteria or cyano is to lower nutrients since cyano can be fueled by high phosphates or nitrates (cyano can also pop up due to elevated organics). So wouldn’t it be counter-intuitive to raise one of these elements? Let’s dig into this a bit. If both nitrates and phosphates are high then one can use Granular Ferric Oxide or GFO to lower phosphates and carbon dosing to lower nitrates. I used to run GFO on my reef tanks and it was certainly easy to use, but there were some downsides. If used too aggressively GFO can shock corals and cause SPS to fade. Another downside with GFO is that it will not
