Many people have asked me what I used to instant cycle my new build. There are definitely many bacteria out in the market but after much research and speaking to Shawn Hale at Fritz Aquatics, Lance Ichinotsubo of Elite Marinelife by Captive Seas and Chris Meckley of ACI Aquaculture, I was sure that Turbostart 900 would be the way to go and I am glad that I did. Formulated specially for saltwater, this strain of bacteria is one of a kind denitrifying bacteria bacteria that simply works. Here in this video, Chris Meckley of ACI tells us how he uses them exclusively for his fish holding systems (2000 gallons each) when he bleaches them twice a year for preventive measures for possible parasites without any loss of precious fish lives. Have confidence, follow directions and use the trusted product that's being used by the pros. Enjoy! by Afishionado | May 18, 2017 | Events, Industry, Reef, Science
For first time this year, we presented Reef A Palooza / Afishionado award. Both Sanjay and I walked the floor and inspected all the booth and looked for our candidate for the best booth that had the creative, attractive, interactive and fun booth. Take a look and see who won and see what new products/items that they had in store for us! Enjoy. by Afishionado | May 12, 2017 | Events, Industry, Video
For this Reef A Palooza, we had the pleasure of introducing Reef A Palooza / Afishionado Awards. I teamed up with one and only Professor Sanjay Joshi to find out who brought the best of best. For this video, Sanjay and I went to find who had the best corals and who were the rookie that deserved our recognition. Check it out! by ReefBum | Mar 27, 2017 | Science, Tanks
There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to keeping a successful captive reef tank and unfortunately a tank can go south in a hurry if one of those parts gets out of whack. Sometimes a tank crash is due to a mistake by the reef keeper while other times it is carelessness or just bad luck. As for mistakes, they do happen, although many can be prevented by doing some homework before acting to correct a problem or attempting to achieve better results. Yes, knowledge is power when it comes to reef keeping and I learned this the hard way when I tried something without doing the required research, causing a former tank to crash. It was years ago and at the time there by ReefBum | Mar 26, 2017 | Feeding
Marine fish on natural reefs are always in the feed mode, as they hunt down food in the water column or pick for food on live rock as they swim in and around the reef. Many fish in a captive reef tank will typically not do this, as they consume most of their food in concentrated amounts when the reef keeper feeds the tank. Well, there is one product out there that provides an alternative. Masstick fish food, manufactured by Easy Reefs, is a self-adhesive paste (yes, you read that right) you can stick on the aquarium glass or live rock, allowing fish to constantly pick over time and feed in a more natural manner. The food is sold as a powder and all you have
