Water chemistry is a complex subject, but it is also an incredibly important one. It governs every factor within your aquarium and is pivotal to the health of the animals living in it. While there are a good deal many other water parameters to bear in mind, we have selected those which we believe to be the most important in saltwater aquariums. This guide will highlight those water parameters that we feel saltwater fish keepers should most be aware of. It will also explain how to go about adjusting the levels of these parameters in your tank. pH Fluctuations in pH levels can dramatically affect the health of the fish in your tank. Moreover if you have a reef tank then your occupants are likely to by ReefBum | Jun 11, 2016 | Fish, Reef, Science
Minimizing stress is the name of the game when acclimating fish to a reef tank so it is important to follow some some basic rules to ensure fish have a healthy transition to their new environment. Step one is to equalize the temperature of the water in the bag with the temperature of the tank. This can be done by floating the sealed bag in either the sump or tank for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Once the temperature is equalized, the fish can be removed from the bag by cutting open the top and pouring the water into a temporary container such as a five gallon bucket. Just make sure there is enough water in the container for the fish to be upright so it is not flapping by Marcin Smok | May 29, 2016 | Fish, Industry, Opinion

Last week we posted an article explaining how unwelcome trespassers have recently disrupted the environment and possibly killed a Devil’s Hope Pupfish (Cyprinodon diabolis), one of the rarest fish species on the planet. After hearing of this incident, we thought it would be interesting to learn more about how this fish can survive in such an inhospitable desert environment such as “Death Valley”. We begin with a little history of how this fish has survived more than one conflict with humans. Back in the 1960s, the Pupfish was almost wiped out due to water pumping activities around the geothermal springs where this fish lives. Fortunately for the Pupfish, environmental activists mobilized which led to a US Supreme Court ruling giving protection to the small population by AquaNerd | May 23, 2016 | Corals, Fish, Reef, Science
This weeks featured coral of the week comes to us from our sponsor Joe Knows Reefs. The GB Avatar Chalice looks incredibly similar to a coral I once had that I picked up from Fishy Business in Columbia, SC called the FB Blue Ghost. The blue ghost chalice is a relatively easy chalice to care for and it prefers lower light and low to moderate indirect flow so I think it’s safe to assume Joey’s specimen would prefer the same conditions. At the time of this article writing, Joe Knows Reefs only has 1 of these WYSIWYG corals in stock and at $159.99 the price is right for this fast growing chalice.
