We have entered the age of smart devices, and our aquariums are certainly a part of that. For this video, we got our hands on the IceCap Smart RODI unit, which is touted as one of the smartest and most efficient RODI water filtration units on the market.… by Marcin Smok | Nov 18, 2016 | Equipment, Opinion, Tanks, Technology
One of the most crucial purchases anyone starting a saltwater aquarium faces is a reverse osmosis/deionization (RO/DI) filtration system. Distilled water ranks at the top of the list of “ingredients” for a successful reef tank, and is a necessary factor in... by Marcin Smok | Sep 23, 2016 | Equipment, Industry, MACNA, Photography, Technology
SpectraPure’s line of RO/DI filtration devices are true workhorses in many aquarists’ homes, mine included, and their presence at MACNA in San Diego didn’t escape my attention. I stopped at the SpectraPure booth on Day 2 of MACNA and had an opportunity to talk... by Saltwater Smarts | Mar 10, 2016 | Corals, Fish, Reef, Science
RO/DI treatment is a hedge against tap water which typically has impurities that can cause issues in our aquariumsQuestionI’ve been keeping saltwater aquariums for five years, and in all that time I’ve never used RO/DI water for top offs or mixing up clean salt water. I just use tap water treated with a dechlorinator / dechloraminator, and I’ve never had any problems. Could it be that people are exaggerating the benefits of using RO/DI?” – Submitted by Lee H. Answer Though you may have gotten by using only a dechlorinator/dechloraminator to treat your water thus far, you may not always be so lucky. I’m a strong proponent of using RO/DI-treated (or otherwise purified) source water in any marine aquarium system for several reasons. Here are just a few: Water treatment protocols are for people Municipalities aren’t (nor should they be) worried about providing water that’s safe for sustaining sensitive marine organisms. Their only concern is ensuring that the water is safe for people to drink, bathe in, etc. by Saltwater Smarts | Feb 5, 2016 | Corals, Equipment, Fish, Industry, Photography, Reef, Science, Tanks, Technology
Actinic lighting was developed and used in other industries before reef aquariumsWe marine aquarists use a variety of tools to help keep our tanks healthy by either changing or removing the waste products of the animals we keep. But did you know virtually all of the devices we use were originally designed for other industries? OzoneFor instance, ozone is a naturally forming gas found in our atmosphere that helps protect us from the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. It was discovered in 1839 by Christian Friedrich Schönbein. Ozone was originally used to purify drinking water and as a health-giving gas. Unfortunately, that health idea produced just the opposite result because the oxidizing effect we can use to purify certain things will also oxidize us, especially our lungs.
