When it comes to building a healthy, stable marine or reef aquariums, the rocks and the substrate you choose make a big difference. In our hobby, there are many great options out there and I would like to introduce you guys to another great option from my friends at Pisces USA. I first met them at a Global Pet Expo few years back and had a great time learning about their company, their philosophy, and their products.

With that said, let’s dive in!

Pisces USA carries two types of sands: Coarse Aragonite and Oolitic Aragonite.

Coarse Aragonite
Pisces USA’s Coarse Aragonite is ideal for those who prefer a more structured substrate made up of a larger granular size of sand so that it doesn’t get blown away easily. The size ranges from 2mm to 5mm which is an ideal size for me if I were to set up a tank with sand inside. Its larger grain size helps prevent compaction while promoting beneficial bacterial growth and maintaining optimal water chemistry. Aragonite, consisting of calcium carbonate, (CaCO₃) helps to stabilize pH and alkalinity and are great sand for the beneficial bacteria to seed and thrive as a filter.

Oolitic Aragonite
For aquarists looking to recreate soft, white Caribbean sands, Oolitic Aragonite is a beautiful and functional choice. Its fine, spherical grains are gentle on bottom dwellers and ideal for deep sand beds that support denitrifying bacteria.
It’s often referred as “sugar-sized”  due to the granular sizes and the size ranges between 0.1mm and 1mm. It’s extremely beautiful, but make sure that the powerhead isn’t directed at it so that it won’t blow away.
The result of this sand in an aquarium is a stable pH, natural buffering capacity and great environment for the sand dwelling animals.

Both substrates are beautiful and will work as intended for the application helping with the look that you are trying to accomplish with your aquarium. They are 100% natural and sustainably sourced from the Bahamas, and are rich in calcium carbonate. As I mentioned previously, they help maintain stable alkalinity and supporting coral health.
