He’s written for several aquarium publications and for many years lorded over the marinelife at Chicago’s venerable Old Town Aquarium. He currently studies prairie insect ecology at the Field Museum of Natural History and fish phylogenetics at the University of Chicago.

This beautiful orange-striped boi, known scientifically as Plectranthias randalli, was recently collected from the deep reefs of Taiwan by Yan Jiaxian of FormosaFish, and it might very well mark the first time that this species—a true holy grail among the perchlets—has made its way into the aquarium trade.
