Bristle worms are a good thing. The old school was that they ate and killed things in your tank. Now we realize that they eat things that are dead or nearly dead. They are our friends.

Do a search here on bristle. Lots of info.

I agree. They eat stuff that the tank doesn't need. There are a small percentage that can be harmfull, but you should be able to spot those munching on corals if they're present.

Hey, they really are the best clean up crew to be found. But if you have any big ones, i think they are bad news. if you don't have alot in your tank for the big ones to eat, they have been known to go after your inhabitants. i've had four clams eaten by one alone. it took me 3 months to catch and he was about 4-5 inches long and about as round as a pen.

I've have bristleworms in my tank that are over a foot long. They have never bothered anything. They keep things clean and tidy. They are good guys. :D

Agreed. They can eat clams when they get larger. they will start from the foot and eat thier way literaly through the clam.

I completely disagree with this statement. A dead or dying Clam will be cleaned up by bristleworms but a healthy clam has nothing to worry about.

It's easier to blame a lowly detrivore than to question your husbandry skills.

if a dead of dying clam means its opened beautifully and is the brightest blue you've ever seen under a 20,000k halide, plus is, and has been, eating fine. then yea thats why it ate mine, and the clams were eaten at night, and alls that was left was a blue rim around the top, the inside was hallow, and mucus everywhere! But since he's been removed i've been able to keep clams. magic huh! i'm not saying all big ones are bad but some can mean trouble. you just have to watch out for it. and i don't see why the little ones can't clean up enough, ( with their small apitites! NOT!!) there is just no need for the big ones.

 I didn't even realize the original thread was from 2001.

Someone did a search for "bristle worms" and resurrected it!

I like the way it ended up!
