I've had this stuff come and go. Don't know what it is, but it has never caused an issue.

I just went through the hitchhikers FAQ thinking I would find you a picture and a description because they are so common (at least I thought they were) but to my suprise didn't find it.
(You probably already looked there anyway).

Anyway I think they are the same thing as in my "Tiny Red Spikes ID" thread. They're called Foraminiferams. Someone who knows more than me will confirm and probably post a link for you too.

I just bought a large new peice of live rock and it is covered with little white branched ones just like in your picture.

These are foramniferans, as Ronda said, or possibly sponges. If they're hard, they're the former.

I'd agree... they are foraminiferins based on the "spikiness".

Just got back from the annual collecting trip. You'd be amazed at what you can pull up in these waters this time of year. Wrasses, Butterflies, Lookdowns, Filefishes, Lions...

Yeah I know, we get those and a few more here off of NC. Joe keeps saying he'll take my scuba diving up there, although the timing is never right (and he is way too busy). My wife grew up not far from Islip so we visit regularly.
