It looks like a snail threw the glass but I uncovered it and it does not really have a shell. It does but no like a snail. I came as a hitchiker in my live sand I believe. It has been in my tank since the second month of the tanks life and it is now been up and running for 18 months. I know it is helping clean the glass and stir the sand so I am not worried about it just always wondered what the heck it was.

Thanks in advance

Pic would really help. Almost impossible to tell from your description, but guesses...

1) Some type of nudibranch
2) Stomatella snail

Without seeing the critter from the top, it's tough to say. My guess would be either Scutus sp or a species of Chiton; heavily leaning towards Chiton.

Chitons good or bad? I assume good but got any details on what they do what they eat, just a idea of what to expect?

I would say from that pic it is a Chiton.

They are ok, they can eat coraline algae and scratch acrylic though.

Most Chitons return to their same spot to rest. They hollow out a spot in the rock that fits like a glove so as not to be washed away with the surf.

If it is in fact a species of Chiton, they are herbivores (good guys), feeding on mostly filamentous algae.
