funnel shaped critters all over my powerheads

wondering what the funnel shaped critters are and more importantly whether they're harmless or not?

They look like harmless sponges to me.

Do you notice anything that comes out of them that looks like long thin hair? Or do they just sit there? Are they soft to the touch or hard and brittle ?

They're soft. I never noticed them until recently when I pulled out my powerheads for cleaning.
