Advanced Reefer
They are bristle worms. Harmless detritivores (they eat all the junk that falls to the bottom) that keep things stirred up and turning over.

The only risk is to your bare skin if you are sensitive to such things.

Thanks for the response. Are they harmful to humans/skin or I guess you meant just to people who are squeamish to such things?

Advanced Reefer
The use of masking tape once your hands are dry helps remove the bristles as well. Just wrap any areas of skin you think have bristles with the tape and then unwrap once its well on... it pulls the teeny little bristles out.
