New Reefer
Hello All,

I recently (four day ago) purchased a bubble tip anemone. For the past three days he has looked great! Eating his food; opens nice and wide...

But since this morning when the light came on... he has shriveled up and hasn't opened since!

There is this weird stringy stuff surrounding him.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

what type of lights are you running? and if possible, what are your water parameters? are there any aggressive corals in its vicinity?

its possible its just purging waste products...if you can, take a look at the mouth..it should be tightly closed...if it is open and real loose looking you may have a problem...

mine do the same thing every other week or so...

sounds like he is "melting"... my guess is poor lighting?

i agree with Final.. we need to know more about your setup.

Well... Later in the evening yesterday he opened up and looked great... but again this morning he was closed.

The system is...

30g with 195watts of lighting
765g/hr water turnover
35lb of live rock
60lb of live sand

Other tank mates are:

A group of Zoanthids
Anchor Coral... the anchor coral I know is aggressive but he's about 1 foot away on the opposite side of the tank.

5 small reef hermit crabs
4 turbo snails
Sand Sifting star fish
Two tomato clown fish

Water parameters as of late yesterday are:

SG 1.023
PH 8.3
Temp 78 F
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
Nitrate 5
Calcium 410
Carbonate Hardness 9 dKH
Phosphate 0

Any ideas?
I have a moon light and occasionally I'll be up at 2 -4 am in the morning and no sweeper tentacles are out from the anchor coral.

Thanks for your help.

Try boosting your specific gravity up to 1.025. Anemones, IME, don't like low salinity. Also, is your temperature fluctuating a lot? They don't like it too hot either. It is normal for them to draw up and re-inflate once a day, but not for too long. Is you salinity fluctuating a lot or do you have an auto top-off? They like stable salinity.
