Let me start off by saying i am not a chemist by any means. Dint pretend to be, and never could be.But......
Probably the most important thing i have learned about this hobby is, it takes real time for a well established tank. No matter what method you run or try, your tank will go through different cycles. It took thousands of years for the reefs too become what they are now. how far along that cycle is your tank I have been a equipment junkie, Ive ran several ulns tanks, sugar, vodka, brightwell bacteria systems, vinegar, and bio-pellets. all kind of basically do the same thing with a different carbon source to fuel. you still will go through cycles. I have had my ups and downs in this hobby as well as most have. beyond knowledge in the hobby, patience is by far the most over looked.
If you plan to run one of the methods, i wouldn't suggest not starting it till the tank is at least 6 months old. a good balanced skimmer for your tank. most expensive isn't always the best matched.
Also realize every time you introduce a new piece, even if dipping, you are still introducing new strains of bacteria into your tank. sometimes the most basic is the most traumatic downfall.
