maybe just put on the sand in a low flow area so that it does not float around, and maybe it will attach like a ricordia? put piece of netting over it so it does not float around?

No idea if that will work, just a thought.

I've had a modern coral bail off the skeleton and it stayed alive for over 5 months in my sump... till it got buried underneath chaeto.
I was holding out to see if it would ever grow a skeleton again, however I am sure that it started to before it ended. Is it possible that a polyp would survive provided that you can recover and allow for skeletal growth, sure it may be possible. But it could also be possible that it would never grow enough that you would see it... and by that time I would be sure that you would have grown too impatient and given up.
