Elos Midi overflow noise reduction

I just setup my Elos Midi and love the tank. However, the overflow is LOUD.

The return pump (Sicce 2.5) is quiet and adjustable, and I have it turned down as low as I can. However, the drain is still loud. Very loud. I've heard that the slime coat needs to build up and that should help, but I can't imagine the slime coat making a huge difference.

However, I'm worried (a little) about overflowing water because the drain hose takes up space and possibly not being able to handle the flow on its own.

The second option is to use the return as a backup drain, run the main drain-line at full siphon, and have the return line go over the tank (u-shape idea). ..like a Herbie standpipe. I'm not a huge fan of that idea either, mostly because of the return line being run externally (well, kind of).

Drilling the tank is not an option. Which option should I go with? Any other ideas?

Take a turkey baster and force water down. It'll help quiet it.
Did you get the silencer with it? It's a tube that's cut that controls the water drainage as well so that helps too.

Not sure about the silencer.. Is it a grey pipe that connects to the flex pipe and hits the water in the sump?

Nope it's a tube that guys right into the drain at the top. You insert it and move it around to change the water flow. It helps allot.
In your link look at post 23. It's a pvc pipe that's cut diagonally. I can't seem to find a picture of it. You never had one in your mini?

The noise is usually too much air going down the drain.

I had a similar issue with the Elos mini (which I think you owned at some point) when I first put it up. i had to mess around with the return pump (also adjustable Tunze 1073.40 at the time) and settle at about a click or 2 from the lowest setting. The water level on the tank is about 3/4" from the rim for me.

Then when I updated the pump to something a little smaller, Sicce 1.5, i had to fiddle with the pump again to even it out.

I don't have one of those pieces, and didn't have one on the Mini. Interesting. The Mini wasn't nearly as loud as this.

I'm glad you were able to fix the noise issue on the Mini. The return pump on my tank is turned down pretty much as far as it can be.

I started at the lowest setting of the pump. Then increased the flow slowly until I'm able to closely match the drain rate of the overflow. This significantly lessened the noise (waterfalling sound) and after about 2-3 weeks I can hardly hear it and I'm typically less than 10 feet away from the tank.

I'm essentially doing the same thing. Last night I was experimenting and decided to block the entire drain with the plastic overflow cover (that goes on top of the overflow box) for a few seconds.. sure enough, after the water started flowing again, the noise was cut in half. It's still audible, and I'm not going to be happy with it until I can further reduce the noise, but it's much less annoying. No idea why that worked, but it did.

I have the mini and had similar noise issue on the overflow because of air pocket.
Very low tech fix - put my finger into the top overflow opening, let water flow thru around my finger to eliminate the air pocket, and noise is significantly reduced.

Sounds like that's what happened in my case as well.

It's still audible, and I'd like to further reduce the noise. Hopefully the slime coat will help further reduce the noise.
