Rigging a PAR38 bulb

I have a section in my tank that is dedicated to LPS. Most which can not tolerate high lighting. I have placed an RBTA in this part of the tank and it is not getting enough light. What I would like to do is purchase a PAR38 bulb and rig it on to one of those dimming switch that you can purchase in home depot. Is this possible or will I damage the PAR38 bulb by dimming it with a dimming switch? I want to point the bulb towards the RBTA so that it gets more light. I have a low profile canopy so I cannot mount the bulb high.

Some bulbs state that they are dimmable while others are not so just make sure you checj the specs for the specific bulb your looking at
