I love the ER skimmer design, but I've always disliked the way the water exits the skimmer. I don't like having the little sponge on their because it just catches crud and gets dirty. Removing the sponge, however, creates a lot of noise and salt spray. Here's my way to kill two birds wit' one rock.
I basically made a sheath that goes around the exit tube, and drilled some small airholes in the top. It's two to three 2" PVC slip couplings glued together (don't use PVC pipe in there, it's too tight a fit and will just restrict the flow). There is a 2" cap on top with a few holes drilled in it. Doesn't change the flow, it's quieter than the sponge even, and it's easy!
