Fixing a Prizm?

I was curious if anyone has tried to mod a prizm so that it works better.

I've got one on my 7 gallon tank, but it either skims off a pint of water in five minutes, or nothing at all. I keep thinking.. there has got to be a better way to do this without going into overkill.

Any ideas anyone?
