Using the more powerful pump may improve performance, but generally there's a point of diminishing returns.

Personally I think I would send an email to the manufacturer and ask them. Most likely they've tried a wide range of pumps on their skimmer and probably know better than anyone where the sweet spot is.

there is a pdf file on the same site as the link you posted that recomends a gen-x pump for the best results. this is a sugestion as other pumps will work with the same flow. the input is .5 inch it says so mabe a little giant would work better. if your realy in the mood to mix things up you could use the sedra pump with a needle wheel inpeller and get rid of the venturi all together.

I agree with angey john, if you really want to mod it- get rid of venturi and install N/W pump. (I like gen-x pumps or Ocean runners because of the much finer bubbles)
