55 gal tank

Are the sides of 55gal tanks tempered normally? Over the weekend I tried to drill the side of a year old Wal-Mart tank from there 55 kit got bout half way and it shattered 8O not glass braking (crack) but tempered braking (spider web). So am a little confused. :?: Was drilling the short sides was using water and all.

Are these tanks just not drillable?

I had heard that usually only the bottom glass on 55s was tempered, so I tried to drill the back of one of mine... kaboom! It was really frustrating because I had already gotten all the way through the tank and the drill was off, but about 5 seconds later the entire glass imploded. I think it probably depends on the manufacturer of the tank, but after my experience I assume they are tempered unless I have a compelling reason to believe otherwise.
