Is there a good way to make a canopy 6-8" taller out of 1/2" oak, 50"x25" while still looking nice?

the canopy now is only 8-9" tall

That's almost double the height.... you my need to add trim around the top or use other decorative trick to make it look less like a tall hat. :?

I assume you can get the same wood and finish it to look like a monolithic piece.

Yes. Just mimic what's already there. On the inside you can add uprights and screw (from the back) the pieces together. Or you could add some biscuits/slots. find the same trim and continue the motif of what's already there.

if your handy with wood, heres what you might try..
if you can take the canopy off , cut the 3 pieces for the sides, and what ever you wan to do with the back, mine is open for ventalation, for the glue you'll want to save the sawdust from the wood you cut, mix it with wood glue, it will make like a paste, then glue your wood together, when the wood drys sand the area, you won't even see the area you glued because the glue you used is made from the sawdust.
i've done this many times.
good luck, let me know if you need any help..

Cool idea. I want to reconstruct my canopy too. Taggin along....

My hood opens up from the top, not any side. I want a front opening top. I have to take the canopy off to do water changes and it's a PITA.
